5 New Holiday Traditions You Can Start Right Now

Unfortunately, in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, we can often lose track of what matters most this time of year: spending precious time with loved ones.

If you're feeling like you've been swept up in the hectic pace of the holidays, running from one social obligation to the next, searching the stores for last-minute gifts or stuck in the kitchen baking and cooking for crowds, don't give up hope. There are many simple ways you can start a new tradition that summons up the true meaning of the season and helps you forge connections with friends and family. So step off the treadmill and try one of the following:

Game night.

Whether it's a classic like Monopoly or Clue, a rousing round of cards or a silly charades competition, one of the best holiday-time traditions is to get everyone together for a game. Playing a game together puts everyone in the present moment, and often leads to lots of laughs and good memories. Just don't opt for anything too competitive, especially with younger children who may put too much emphasis on winning.

Craft time.

Many of us dole out lots of dollars on gifts and decor for the holidays. A great way to return to the simple pleasures of the season is to bring the family together for a craft project. These days, there are many quick and easy ideas on social media for creating homemade treasures, many times with items you already have on hand. Research a couple of simple projects and gather everyone around to put their creativity to work. Not only is this a fun tradition, creating with one's hands helps relieve stress, always a welcome side effect during the holiday season.

Holiday-lights stroll.

As we whisk around town running our holiday errands, it's easy to miss out on the festive light displays that adorn homes and public spaces. Grab the family or a few close friends and head out for a walk around your neighborhood or town at night to really take in and appreciate the beauty of the holiday glow. Bring a thermos of hot cocoa or warm cider to amp up the holiday feel.

Lend a helping hand.

The real spirit of the season emerges when we reach out to help those in need. Start a tradition where you and your family or a group of friends volunteer together. There are most likely plenty of organizations in your area in search of volunteers during the holidays, or it could be as simple as cooking a meal and spending time with an elderly neighbor. No cause is too small, and turning your focus toward others will serve as an important reminder of what matters most during the holidays.
